2010 Bumper Competition Starts Now!

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

It’s time to start sending in your Bumpers for the 2010 Fest. What’s this “Bumper” you speak of? See entries below from our 2009 competition…

…and here’s the full low-down courtesy of Harry Knowles from Ain’t It Cool News:

FANTASTIC FEST Bumper Competition officially starts now!!! Win a week of Geek Heaven for 2 & more!

Hey folks, Harry here… It is less than 22 days till the start of FANTASTIC FEST 2010. There’s just enough time for you to get involved in the 2010 Fantastic Fest bumper contest. The usual requirements for the Bumpers still apply, that they be 15 seconds long and end with the word FANTASTIC being spoken, however you like. Also in past years – we’ve required people to make use of a kid. That is not a requirement this time. And we usually ask that they adhere to some specific genre.

This time. The genre is a favorite of FANTASTIC FEST. The sub-genre of “INAPPROPRIATE”. We’re asking for you, to create a 15 second bumper that is somehow INAPPROPRIATE. That could be through dialogue, sight gags, sickening imagery, exciting imagery… But we want audiences to actually scream OHMYGOD!!! when they see your bumpers. We want something that leaves an impression. Great filmmakers that have worked in the realm of the INAPPROPRIATE sub-genre include the king, JOHN WATERS, TAKASHI MIIKE, LARRY CLARK, KENNITH ANGER, HARMONY KORINE, TOM SIX, FRANK HENENLOTTER, GASPAR NOE, ABEL FERRARA, early PETER JACKSON, ELI ROTH, RUGGERO DEODATO, SRDJAN SPASOJEVIC and of course SATORU OGURA.

A lot to live up to? Yeah – but I’m telling you – if your brain says, “OH NO, WE CAN’T DO THAT” – “OH YES YOU CAN” – Unless of course it is illegal and results in somebody’s unwilling pain.

It is September 2nd.

No later than September 17th, 2010, a standard definition DVD needs to be received by us. You can send it to:

c/o Tim League
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
1120 South Lamar Blvd
Austin, TX 78704

Austin submissions can be dropped off in person at the Alamo South Lamar. The winner will receive two VIP badges for Fantastic Fest 2011, a $250 gift certificate to Alamo Drafthouse as well as a prize pack from Mondo Tees, not to mention the fabulous fame and honor associated with joining the above list of the “INAPPROPRIATE ELITE” – but we’re encouraging you to fuck the norm, fuck it all and express yourself…

Let’s damage some corneas, let’s spin dry some brains and let’s all be FANTASTIC!

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Exactly fifty years ago today, the first audiences were not allowed to arrive late to see shots of an Arizona skyline while “Phoenix, Arizona…Friday, December the Eleventh…Two Forty-Three” was superimposed.  The camera moves into a window, a close-up of some sandwiches, and the voice of John Gavin asks, “You never did eat your lunch, did you?” to the beautiful, white-undergarmented Janet Leigh.

Yes, it is the Golden Anniversary of the film that defined modern horror for the previous five decades, Alfred Hitchcock’s PSYCHO.  When I was in High School, my friend and I would celebrate December 11 every year with a viewing of the movie on video tape and a couple of sandwiches while we both wore our mothers’ clothing.  Now, however, is an even more special date to commemorate.  June 16, 1960, the film premiered and set the world ablaze.

So, Fantastic Film fans, I challenge you to celebrate the greatest horror film of all time with your own creative style.  Bug your relatives in the shower, dig up a corpse from the cemetery, hire a private investigator and push him down the stairs, do whatever you need to do.  And make sure you watch the movie tonight, and remember just how wonderful it is.

If you do anything exciting for this half-century event, please post pics or stories in the comments here.  The best and most creative submission may just win a prize ;)

To pump you up, here’s a great video of the famous shower scene and its impact on popular culture. Posted yesterday by Classic Horror and brought to our attention by Cinematical:

Oh, and in case you’re feeling Psycho Fever, and you’re in Austin, you have a chance to see the sequel to this great film, PSYCHO II, as part of the $1 Terror Tuesday series at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz. The sequel, starring a remorseful and rehabilitated Tony Perkins, is a lot better than you think.

undisputed-3-webAnnihilator Marko Zaror is the undisputed Champ of Fantastic Fest, having attended with three separate face-blasters over the years- KILTRO, MIRAGEMAN & MANDRILL.  MANDRILL even took home the Best Fantastic Feature Prize and Marko himself took home Best Actor in 2009!

Gowalla/Fantastic Fest Challengers! Winners Announced!

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

We finally did it! We got caught up in the SXSW aftermath and it delayed us a while on picking the winners, but it’s here! We had nearly 50 people complete our Fantastic Fest’s Austin Film Tour, and two of those people are about to be SUPER STOKED because they just won themselves a Fantastic Fest VIP Badge for 2010! For those of you that have attended Fantastic Fest religiously for the past several years know how awesome having a VIP badge is. You can get in to essentially every film you want to see, not to mention the after parties, shmoozin’ and boozin’ with our celebrity and filmmaker guests, and maybe even get groped by rowdy strangers! These badges sell for about $285 a pop, and we’re handing this suckers over for free!

The two winners are Brandon Green (@greenatelier) and Greg Lunn (@greglunn)! Thanks guys for playing our game, and congratulations on winning what are probably the coolest prizes we have EVER given away. Contact us via Twitter (@fantasticfest), we’ll sort out all the details, and we’ll see you at the fest!

Gowalla + Fantastic Fest + SXSW = Film Geek Trip & VIP FanFest Badges!

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

We’ve become huge fans of Gowalla, here at Fantastic Fest. Not only are they local (we always have a special place in our hearts for hometown friends), but they also have a pretty cool thing going on with most of the other local businesses around town. You can collect virtual items, redeem them for real, tangible things, and generally, stalk your friends cause you know where they are at all times (stalk in a very friendly way, mind you). We’ve decided that since Gowalla is so super awesome, we wanted to join in on the fun for SXSW. We’ve put together a trip highlighting some of the cool spots around Austin that have been used as film locations from some of your favorite movies! We’ve pulled 10 of our favorites from movies like Office Space, Death Proof, Slacker, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre and have created Fantastic Fest’s Austin Film Tour.

Now sure, you can just look at this list and check out a couple locations… if you want to be BORING! No way, dude. We set this up for the true cinephiles that don’t even need to look at this map that Gowalla has so painstakingly put together because THEY HAVE BEEN TO THESE LOCATIONS A BAZILLION TIMES ALREADY! Or maybe you haven’t! Maybe you’re so eager beaver to check these places out that you forgot to keep reading to the end of this blog entry to see what the prize is for completing this trip! Either way you wanna do it, we highly recommend you hit every spot on here. And here’s why….

We all saw how fast the Fantastic Fest VIP badges for 2010 sold out. Super, crazy fast. There were a lot of sad people. We’re giving those people a second chance. Starting Thursday, March 11, through Wednesday, March 17th, everyone who visits all 10 spots on the trip and earns the Fantastic Fest’s Austin Film Tour pin will be automatically entered to win a VIP badge to Fantastic Fest 2010. These badges sell for about $285 a pop, and we’re handing this suckers over for free.

Get off of your computer, get on your iPhone or Android or magic technology screen and download the Gowalla application (if you don’t have it already). Then grab some buddies (or just yourself if you want fewer people in the raffle… strategy!) and get to trippin’! Check in at all 10 locations, get the pin, and you’ll be entered into the raffle. We’ll randomly pick TWO winners and announce them here and on Gowalla’s blog. Happy trails!

Verbal Abuse + Physical Abuse = TRIUMPH at the FANTASTIC DEBATES!!!

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

debates punch
The Fantastic Debates
Mon, Sept 28 – Midnight – South Austin Gym
(between Alamo South Lamar and The Highball)

It’s high time to settle the score. We all know that movie obsessives rarely agree on anything, but no other festival allows them the option to decide who’s truly correct…WITH THEIR FISTS! At Fantastic Debates, journalists, filmmakers, critics and industry professionals will be entering the Fantastic Fest arena for a formal debate followed by a round of boxing.

One of FF ’08′s most popular, controversial and bone-bruising events returns for THE MAIN EVENT! Last year, the iron-heavy topics of Hollywood Remakes, CGI Laziness and that ol’ debbil George Lucas got the adrenaline pumping, and this year will feature issues that will shake film nerd-dom to its foundations. Plus, in 2009, all participants in The Fantastic Debates will resolve their arguments IN THE damn RING.

Be there for the blood, sweat n’ beers! Add this event to your FF calendar NOW!
